41 Games: Gods Will Be Watching
Gods Will Be Watching is a brilliant game that simply isn't fun to play. I have no idea how to fix it because fixing it would ruin it. I want you all to play it. I want to warn you not to play it.
It's best described as a real-time adventure game. You are in difficult, high-stakes situations, and you have to figure out how to solve them with what's at hand. Each scene is like this: withstand torture, save your band from starving to death or being killed, synthesize the cure to a deadly illness before it kills you all. There is no fluff. You will fail, repeatedly. It's maddening; it's marvelous.
The repeated failure is woven into the game's narrative as well, all building to one of the most intense climaxes of any game I've played.
It should be so much higher on this list. But I also can't recommend it unless you have immense patience for trial and error (or willingness to use a guide, I guess.)
